“Help is available for back to school nightmare” says local AM

Cardiff Central AM Jenny Rathbone is reminding parents that they may be entitled to extra help in getting ready for back to school.

The Welsh Labour Government’s school uniform grant is available to families on low incomes and can help take the pressure off hard pressed families. The grant is available to:

  1. pupils going into the first year (Year 7) of Secondary School who are entitled to free school meals, and
  2. pupils aged 11 at the start of the school year who go to special schools, special needs resource bases and pupil referral units and who are entitled to free school meals.

The Labour AM said:

“Back to school preparations can be a nightmare for any family but they are even worse for families who are on low incomes. The Welsh Labour Government recognises this and I am proud that we have been able to provide support.

“It’s really important that parents know this grant exists and that help is available to them.

“As well as the school uniform grant, families may be entitled to free school meals and free school milk."

The school uniform grant is available to: 1. pupils going into the first year (Year 7) of Secondary School who are entitled to free school meals, and 2. pupils aged 11 at the start of the school year who go to special schools, special needs resource bases and pupil referral units and who are entitled to free school meals.

Primary and secondary school pupils will get free school meals if their family receives: 1. Income Support, 2. Income Related Employment Support Allowance, 3. Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, 4. Guarantee Element of State Pension Credit, or 5. Child Tax Credit with an income less than £16,190. 6. Families who get Working Tax Credit do not qualify.

Pupils get free milk if they are: 1. aged five and under, 2. aged seven and under and get free school meals, or 3. are in Key Stage 1.

Any families that need to apply should contact Cardiff Council on: 029 20872087
