A Picture of Diabetes in Wales

14th November is World Diabetes Day. Around 180,000 people in Wales are currently being treated for diabetes.

This map shows how important is it to tackle the condition of Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than Type 1, accounting for around 90% of adults with diabetes. Type 2 is often linked to lifestyle factors. Obesity is the most significant risk factor, and could amount to 80 – 85% of the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

A healthy diet, exercise and lowering stress levels can all help prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Improving the support and patient education for both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes is also essential.
