Jenny Rathbone AM writes: Cost of Childcare

Over 40 years of the women’s movement demanding affordable, quality childcare and where are we now?

In Cardiff it costs between £42 and £46 a day to secure a place for a 1-3 year old. Babies cost more.

It’s slightly cheaper in Wrexham: £37 a day and it might be cheaper again the further west you go.

But if you are on average wages or below, having a child is likely to be a journey into poverty. If you are in a Flying Start area you can get two hours of free nursery education a day for your two year old; and all children get that when they are 3. Two hours a day is great for the child’s learning but it is of no use at all to a working parent.

If you have a willing and able grandparent or other family member you are quids-in. But for most people unless you have a sympathetic employer and a willing and able partner who also has a sympathetic employer, one parent is likely to be out of the labour market for 5 years! No wonder women are still earning less than 80% of what men get.
