I asked the First Minister to support the Charter for British Steel.
Steel is crucial for constructing safe buildings and bridges. I raised the problem in the Senedd of steel coming into the UK from abroad that does not meet the Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing (also known as BES6001). This is a major safety issue aswell as putting at risk large number of jobs in the steel industry.
Celsa Steel is a big Cardiff employer, employing over 3,000 people, so I was encouraged by the First Minister who welcomed the Charter for British Sustainable Steel, and the initiative by Cardiff’s Council Leader, Cllr Phil Bale, who has written to all local authority leaders across Wales asking them to specify BES 6001 in any contracts they enter into. The First Minister agreed to look into adopting this standard for Welsh Government contracts.
